Development of the map-based platform ETHorama

With ETHorama, ETH Zurich's ETH-Library operates an innovative, map-based web platform that offers digital access to historical documents and associated locations. The first version was getting on in years and needed comprehensive modernization - both in the backend and in the administration app to manage content and data. The aim was to completely rebuild the application in order to be able to operate and further develop it in a future-proof manner.

Development of the card-based platform
The implementation was carried out in close cooperation with the ETH-Bibliothek project team. Feedback from stakeholders was incorporated early on in the project and translated into the optimization of features.
The existing range of features was adopted but further developed taking into account a consistent mobile-first approach. The design was optimised for use on smartphones and tablets and subtly adapted to the ETH branding. The existing content was migrated and prepared for the new data model - no small task, because since 2014, around 42,836 images, 20,776 texts and 1,390 historical maps of around 6,533 locations and areas have been made available via ETHorama.
With the comprehensive modernization, ETH Library is now able to operate the platform sustainably and continuously expand it.
